I'd say that membership in a network economy is more analogous to investing in a business venture than, say, joining a social media network.

In other words, it's more a question of ability to create strong "demand signals" (both in having the capital behind it and in demonstrating credibility in fair compensation) than it is about "network effects" (what social media networks need).

Once you already have a decentralized public market (due to existence of other network economies), forming each additional network economy becomes a lot easier since you already have contributors producing goods in the market, and now they just need to meet the additional demand of the new network economy.
